Something is brewing, to be sure.

Helen, if I know Charn, he's trying to figure out how to keep Isa and Portia from finding out about each other. I got the idea from textbooks in high school (especially history) where previous students had, um, "annotated" some of the pictures and text.

As for the smirk… it's well-known among the Westmarch apprentices, at least the ones Charn's age or older, that he had a Conclave Romance with a girl he wants to see again at the next Gathering. Now Portia (being a new apprentice) is 13, and seems to have a crush on Charn (who is 15 and beginning his 3rd year). Charn lets his hormones talk to him much more than, say, Mik… and, well, you can guess how that could go. Especially if Vibeli puts the wrong word in the wrong ears…Larry Kollarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08317037795075278427noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12954391.post-17395080595564140652013-03-10T14:08:41.848-04:002013-03-10T14:08:41.848-04:00This world feels so alive, you managed to tell me ...This world feels so alive, you managed to tell me a lot about it in few words - and I love the idea of tracing marginalia in library books and what it can tell you about previous readers, even if I hate the idea of anyone borrowing one of mine and writing in it! And I saw that smirk as mischievous and potentially bad for Charn. There may be trouble ahead... I can always pull something out of my captive wiki. :-)

Danielle, I thought the smirk was a message to Charn: "see, how do *you* like unwanted attention?"
