Getting Ready for Spring

The hedge in front of our garage is getting ready for spring. On the other hand, it will bloom all year around if it gets a mild winter like the one just gone by1. It started sprouting bulbs in early February; they got frostbit so the hedge just shrugged and started another round. Check out the top right picture from last year, this is what it will look like when it blooms. We’re supposed to wait for it to stop blooming to trim it, but it never stops!

I’ve been planting herbs — garlic some friends gave me (and some more that I bought to eat but sprouted), marjoram, and basil. Lots and lots of basil. I’m going to be the Pesto King this year.

1Of course, now that I said that, we’ll get a late frost. But the extended forecast shows us staying above freezing by a reasonable (for March) margin, so…

  2. Oh, I got so excited about the pic of the blooming hedge that I posted before reading the herbs.

I love basil! I've got a pot growing on my windowsill and it smells so good. I think Pesto King sounds great. Do you have a special recipe you use?

  3. Hey O... the only thing "special" I do with pesto is to replace the pine nuts with either walnuts or sunflower seeds. Pine nuts are just too dang expensive!

I forgot to mention something too: the hedge is almost as tall as I am (actually higher in spots), which is why it needs a trim. There's a gap at the kitchen window, but the part next to the chimney is nearly 8 feet high (um... mumble... 2-1/2 meters?).

What passes for winter here lasted about 3 weeks, mostly in February. After one of the warmest Januarys on record, a below-normal February felt cold! But we didn't have much of the usual winter-spring-winter-spring-etc. this time.

  4. 8 ft! A nonstop flowering 8 ft hedge sounds divine! :D

Was wondering if you used pine nuts. They are expensive. I've never heard of using sunflower seeds ... interesting!

I have comment moderation on for posts over a week old, but that’s so I’ll see them.
